A small loft in a big city

Brno's pilot pigeon loft was built on the roof of the City Hall building on Kounicova Street. It opened in June 2024 and has a maximum capacity of roughly 60 pigeons. The first pair nested and laid eggs shortly after the space became available, confirming that the location had been chosen well.

The loft is fully operational and eggs are regularly replaced with dummy eggs. Occupancy increases gradually because pigeons are strongly attached to their established nesting sites and need time to adopt a new home.

Caretakers monitor individual nesting shelves, record visits and egg replacements, and remove droppings, feathers and dust during regular maintenance — waste that would otherwise remain in the surrounding public space.
