From a Single Idea to a Project Bringing People Together Across the Czech Republic
In the beginning, it was just me. One idea, one vision, and a determination to make a difference.
Over time, that idea grew into a project that now brings together people from different parts of the Czech Republic. People who believe that urban pigeons deserve respect, proper care, and decent living conditions.
Who Is Behind Městské holubníky?
My name is Michaela Klimšová. I come from Ostrava, and I am the founder of Městské holubníky (Urban Pigeon Lofts).
I have always loved animals. Nature is where I find my energy and inspiration, and horse riding has always been one of my greatest passions.
Throughout my life, I have wanted to dedicate my time and energy to something truly meaningful. Something that would benefit not only animals but society as a whole.
There are many areas in which help is needed. I chose to focus on urban pigeons – animals that are often overlooked, misunderstood, and treated more as a nuisance than as living beings.
I believe that helping others gives my life a deeper purpose. I care about what happens in the world around me, and I am convinced that even one person can make a difference.
All it takes is the courage to begin, the patience to keep going, and the determination not to give up when challenges arise.
And that is exactly how the story of Městské holubníky began.
WHY PIGEON LOFTS?
A few years ago, when I learned how urban pigeons were sometimes treated, I was shocked.
Pigeons are part of our cities, yet their welfare is often overlooked. They are frequently regarded as unwanted animals, while their living conditions receive very little public attention.
But pigeons are living creatures that deserve compassion, responsible treatment, and protection.
I wanted to show that urban pigeon management could be approached differently – humanely, systematically, and with consideration for both people and animals.
Inspired by the German City of Augsburg
A turning point for me was visiting the German city of Augsburg.
There, I discovered a well-developed urban pigeon management system based on supervised pigeon lofts.
These lofts provide pigeons with a suitable place to live while allowing their population to be managed humanely, for example by replacing eggs with artificial replicas.
This approach inspired me so deeply that I decided to work towards introducing similar solutions in the Czech Republic.
That decision led me to establish Městské holubníky, an initiative dedicated to helping Czech cities introduce effective, long-term, and humane approaches to urban pigeon management.
My vision is to build a nationwide network of managed pigeon lofts, change public perceptions of urban pigeons, and contribute to improving their protection in practice and through legislation.
OUR TEAM – THE PEOPLE WHO GIVE OUR PROJECT WINGS
Behind every successful pigeon loft are people who truly care about its purpose.
Our team consists of passionate individuals and volunteers from across the Czech Republic who work together to turn our vision into reality.
Pigeon Loft Caretakers
Our caretakers are an essential part of the project.
They look after the day-to-day operation of individual pigeon lofts, understand the local pigeon population, maintain cleanliness, monitor conditions, and help ensure the birds' health and welfare.
For many of them, this is more than volunteering. It is an opportunity to actively help animals and contribute to making the world a more compassionate place.
Project Ambassadors
Our ambassadors also play a vital role.
They raise awareness, introduce the concept of managed pigeon lofts to the public, represent the project in their communities, and bring fresh ideas to our initiative.
The roles of ambassador and caretaker can naturally complement each other. Everyone can get involved according to their interests, experience, and availability.
Thanks to these incredible people, Městské holubníky can continue to fly further. And higher!

WHAT ARE WE WORKING TOWARDS?
Our mission is about much more than building pigeon lofts. We want to gradually transform the way Czech cities approach urban pigeon management.
Our main goals are:
Build a nationwide network of managed pigeon lofts. From simple, practical attic lofts to modern pigeon towers that can also serve as attractive architectural features in public spaces.
Promote humane pigeon population management. Support systematic, sustainable approaches that consider the needs of both cities and animals.
Improve the status of urban pigeons. Advocate for better protection, responsible treatment, and positive changes in public attitudes and legislation.
Make pigeons an interesting and COOL topic. Show that animal welfare does not have to be boring and that urban pigeons have stories worth telling.
Work with cities, municipalities, and organisations. Connect public authorities, experts, non-profit organisations, businesses, and other partners.
Involve the public and volunteers. Create opportunities for people of different ages, professions, backgrounds, and experiences to contribute.
Educate children and younger generations. Develop engaging educational programmes for kindergartens and schools, organise events, and make animal welfare accessible and enjoyable.
TOGETHER, WE CAN MAKE A GREATER DIFFERENCE
I believe that every positive change begins with one person's decision to act.
What started as a small idea has gradually become a project bringing people together around a shared goal – creating cities where people and pigeons can coexist with respect and compassion.
And our story is far from over.
